MOVIE GUIDE: THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE (2024)
Some movies are meant to entertain us, some movies are meant to scare us or makes us laugh. Some to help us evade the harsh realities of our daily life. “The Girl With The Needle” is going to open your eyes in a way few films have done in a quite long time. Karoline is a seamstress trying to make ends meet in 1918’s Copenhagen AND suddenly finds herself unemployed and pregnant. In a society sharply divided by the aristocracy and the working class laborers, Karoline DOES NOT HAVE MANY options with her upcoming baby until she casually meets Dgamar, a woman running an underground adoption ring. This is just the beginning of a heavy punch drama that could easily resonate nowadays, one that is presented almost as if IT was a horror story…actually, it is a human horror story. Director Magnus Van Horn and his very young and super talented DP, Michal Dymek both createD a visual masterpiece that goes along hand in hand with Karoline’s terrible story. A Black and White statement that sometimes borrows from the German Expressionism and salutes the stunning and horrifying images of Tod Browning’s “Freaks”. Images that underscore the nightmare of our main character and often, the depravity of the human soul.
Sometimes, movies are meant to punch us in the gut, to make us shake our heads… and sometimes that’s perfectly Ok.
“…The world is a horrible place. But we need to believe it’s not so…”
