ACCENT, METER AND TEMPO: RE BY CAFÉ TACVBA

Though this album is commonly likened to The Beatles’ White Album in terms of its effect on latin rock, a more close musical comparison is found in Ween’s The Mollusk. Constantly changing moods and genres, this album feels like an attempt to show everything Cafe Tacvba was interested in at the same time. Like The Mollusk, Re is not strictly a concept album, but it does paint a picture of the huge musical landscape found in Mexico, going from punk to banda, bolero, and much more. In a way, while The Mollusk’s themes came from a love for the ocean, Re feels like it came from pride over what Mexican music is and could be.
